Alph is the alpha male who dominates the Hallo Bay Wilderness. We estimate Alph's age to be around 20 years old, putting him in the latter stages of his prime. This magnificent bear is respected by all who share his home range, which is illustrated as other bears evacuate the area when his presence is detected. Alph's relaxed demeanor and deliberate actions portray a supreme confidence and wisdom achieved through years of experience. We estimate Alph to be the father of most of the younger resident bears, including Ted.
We have a wonderful picture of Alph coming over the ridge behind the beach. I thought that Alph was challenged a couple of years ago and lost his position of dominance.
He was in pretty rough shape in late 2007 and we did not see him at all in 2008. His eye sight looked pretty bad and he was loosing weight. He was pretty old for a bear. Hopefully we will see him this year but you never know.
