Alaska Sandhill Cranes
In a note to Michelle Michaud from Clint and Simyra at Alaska's Hallo Bay Bear Camp:
The colts have been running and flapping their wings for about 10 days now. My neighbor reported seeing the colts in low level glides while I have observed the adult birds often encouraging the colts to launch off a small embankment in my yard for short glides.
The colts are doing very well. They did have a close scrape yesterday with a loose hunting breed dog, but came through in good shape.
The birds are still making taking roost for the night on every third day in the natural habitat part of our yard.
Both us and the neighbors have great hopes that this pair of young will make it, almost as if we were raising the colts ourselves. While in fact all our intervention is really just keeping humans and unleashed pets from disturbing the birds, the rest is up to them and they are doing a really great job of it.

We applaud Michelle's efforts in working on a Sandhill Crane nesting ecology study with Kachemak Crane Watch and the International Crane Foundation.
