DID YOU KNOW?

In the wild, it is not uncommon to see bears and wolves searching for food in the same areas. As you'll note in the photo above, the bears and wolf fish together in the same creek. However, should a bear decide to take over a wolf kill, it is almost always successful. There is little a wolf can do about it except to slink off and look for an easier meal and most importantly keep out of reach of the bear's lethal claws. The bears do not have many natural enemies, the only one being man.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hallo Bay Bear Camp is designed to be a wildlife and Alaskan wilderness experience which offers a limited number of people the opportunity to walk amongst the giant brown bears. No one leaves without the feeling of a true wilderness experience and lives are touched by the memories made here.

The bear observation out in the field is conducted under the direction of our professional naturalist guides whose primary duties include the safety of our guests and the continued preservation of this unique area and its magnificent wildlife. Along with our guides, the camp personnel play a very important role in preserving this wilderness area. Unlike other operations which utilize bear traumatizing high voltage electric fences, rubber bullets and mace type sprays to discourage bears, Hallo Bay denies bears the opportunity to learn bad habits, but does not discourage their natural curiosity of their surroundings. Thus it is common to see bears in the camp, but in our many years of operation we have never had a bear cause damage. Hallo Bay personnel utilize the experience and the vast knowledge gained by many years along with lots of common sense to co-exist with these bears in a peaceful and serene environment.

Playing in the Meadow! + Did You Know? by ©RChou

DID YOU KNOW?

Brown Bear cubs will stay with their mother from two to four years. During this time, they will learn survival techniques crucial to their existence. Brown Bear cubs also learn through play. They practice chasing and stalking each other. They chew, swat, and jaw wrestle. These activities build muscles. They will learn which foods return the highest nutritional values, where to attain them, how to hunt, how to fish, how to defend themselves and where to den. The cubs learn by following and imitating their mother’s actions during the period they are with her.

Do Sea Lions Have Tusks?

Question For Our Viewers:

We recently saw this tusk auctioned at an online auction website: 150 year old Sea Lion Tusk.  Is this for real?

We've never seen a sea lion tusk. Have you? If you have, please let us know, because we are bewildered by this information.

We not saying this "sea lion tusk" is illegal, but we would like to remind everybody about The Lacey Act of 1900 and to always be aware of Caveat Emptor!

However, seriously, we really would like to know if sea lions have tusks, and if they do, are they ever this big?

Salmon: End of the Road + Did You Know?

Hallo Bay Bear Camp
Salmon: End of the Road!

 DID YOU KNOW?

Scientists can tell the age of a fish by looking at its ear bone, called the otolith. Growth rings related to water temperature can be seen in the otolith and counted to give age.
