Morty's Camp Diary: July 2009

Yesterday Simyra and guests were on their way back to camp from the Meadow when they saw a young male bear, SlimJim, examining something that looked like driftwood from a distance. SlimJim soon discovered it was not driftwood, but dead sea otter that had washed up. SlimJim thought he had found himself a fine meal. But, alas, there was another bigger female bear who in the area who thought she had a right to that meal as well. A fight ensued betwixt the two. And what a fight that was! Fannie and I could hear it at camp. The bigger female won the rights to the otter, and SlimJim just cowered off to the side, growling and being jealous. But the female must have decided it's too much work to break the skin of the otter and left it for SlimJim after all.
SlimJim had himself a fine meal! He even ignored the tide coming in and after a while he was laying in water as he was eating. I guess it salted his meal. Simyra and guests returned to the camp. After about an hour one of the guests went up to the point and reported that he was still there enjoying his feast. When he was done, there wasn't much left other than the skin.
