In the meadow yesterday we observed a juvenille bear digging for clams on the tidal flats. Beside him at approximately 50 feet was a fox digging for clams as well. They worked at this for quite awhile, being very successful and consuming many clams. After some time, the bear and fox were getting closer and closer until they were only feet apart. The fox then started to inch closer to the bear and the bear laid down in the sand and rolled over and playfully stretched his paws toward the fox. The fox nipped at the bears toes and ran around the bear playfully jumping up and down. The bear then would get up and chase the fox for a few feet and then stop. Then the fox would chase the bear for a few feet. This continued for five to ten minutes, and then they continued clamming once again.
