Bear Haven Man...

Anchorage Daily News: Bear Haven Man Faces State Game Charges
Animal Planet Special: Stranger Among Bears

Charlie Vandergaw's type of activity is not done in many places in Alaska. This fellow was one place that went to great extremes, including touching and not just feeding the bears. A few lodges do it in another manner, they clean their fish catches in one spot on a regular basis and bears come everyday to get the remains and the lodges advertise bear viewing.

Hallo Bay does not and never has fed bears in any way. We even stopped offering sportfishing to leave more fish for the bears and not acclimatize bears to cleaned fish remains. The bears have plenty of food where we are located: Pink Salmon, Silver Salmon, Chum Salmon, Dolly Varden, as well as rich clam beds on the low tide. Also large fields of protein rich sedge grasses, foraging tidelines for marine animals that may have died: i.e. whales, otters, and sea lions. They also eat 13 varieties of berries, a large variety of roots and edible plants. So, why on earth would we want to disrupt nature by feeding the bears in any way!

Hallo Bay Bear Camp does not, and will never condone this type of activity.
