Hallo Bay Camp reported a moderate number of bears yesterday. Took group two-thirds of the way to Big River in early afternoon. Showed them several "bear craters" in sand, close to shady alder patches against the cliffs. In the evening, we went to upper entrance of "cutoff" trail at meadow. One female blonde/brown bear fed within 40 yards. Whenever one of us moved we were threatened with dive-bombing "Yellowlegs" bird, presumably protecting her nest. Spring is here!

> "Bear Crater" is where bears dig a hole in the sand that they lay in cool themselves. The deeper the hole, the cooler the sand. On hot days the bears like to nap in "bear craters"
