Thursday from Camp 061809

As bad as the weather started out to be yesterday (Thursday), Camp ended up with a beautiful day. The birds were chirping, the sun was glorious, and it turned out to be a perfect day for critter viewing - especially when 4 eagles flew over the Camp. Camp said they had 4 bears in the meadow, 2 of which were mating (Springtime is here!). It truly is amazing how much you get to see when the days are so long, with over 21 hours of daylight. Soon Alaska will be coming up to the longest day of the year, and it will be interesting to see how long it will be. Would you like to guess? - -
Everybody at Camp enjoyed a relaxing evening of watching 4 fox down by the tidal flats digging for clams. Fox love eating clams, and pop them open easily with their strong jaws. The fox are shedding their winter coats now, but they're still a beautiful deep orange in color. When they're not eating clams, they like to dine on red back voles they find in the meadows. At one point, Simyra states she has seen a fox with 4 voles, 1 clam, and one dead bird in its jaws, while it scampered back to the den to feed its young. To see nature like this, it can change your life forever.
